About Us

Melissa Seligman

melissa-seligman_bio

Before I was an army wife, or even a mother, I was Melissa. Strong and independent. I put myself through college, earning a B.A. in English, then a Master’s in Education. Now, after eight years of marriage–over seven of those years within the military–I stand proudly with him. But not as a wife who must always be on display. I am, first and foremost, still Melissa. Three deployments and constant separations have nearly broken us. Our marriage has been pushed to the brink of divorce. But we thrive. And, after many separations, I have finally realized one thing: We are in charge of our marriage. Not the military. And certainly not a deployment. I have two small children, a daughter who is 6, and a son, 5. I am still strong, and independent. Only now, all that falls under two words: military wife. My pain, my love, and my experiences are now in my book, The Day After He Left for Iraq.

christinapiperI too had a life before my Army wife status. I was in the Army for five years and even got ready for a deployment. I thought I ended my military career when I was medically retired, but to my surprise I married my high school love and he re-joined the Army. I put myself through school and earned a B.S. in Psychology. I have two kids: a daughter who is 5 and a son who is 3. I have been through three deployments in five years. I have been an FRG leader and a POC and sometimes both at the same time. I stand with my husband, proud of the work that he does. After all the separations, I still love my husband and my life, but I wonder all the time how many times can I do this? When will it stop and why does it keep getting harder to send him off? I know I can handle a separation due to a deployment, but will he return the next time? I am fighting for my marriage and my family. This is my war. I am a military wife.

Great website Melissa and Chris. And such a wonderful voice you both have about your particular personal “war”. I can empathize as every time my son goes to ‘work’ at MSC, I know he his working as a support to the military and …well I’ll just say I breathe better when he comes home. My best wishes for you both and your families. May your individual strengths keep you focused on enjoying all you have that is wonderful.

Thank you so much, Barb. I know exactly what you mean about breathing better. It seems I let out a deep sigh every time I have a chance to hug him again. Thanks for your support.
